We have great pleasure in announcing that Sam Khan has been selected as the recipient of the 2024 Mutagenesis Paper of the Year Award for the following publication:

Ex vivo explant model of adenoma and colorectal cancer to explore mechanisms of action and patient response to cancer prevention therapies

Sam Khan, Gareth J Miles, Constantinos Demetriou, Zahirah Sidat, Nalini Foreman, Kevin West, Ankur Karmokar, Lynne Howells, Catrin Pritchard, Anne L Thomas, Karen Brown.

Mutagenesis, Volume 37, Issue 5/6, Sept/Nov 2022, Pages 227-237

UKEMS would like to congratulate Sam and her co-authors on this award and for their fantastic contribution to the Mutagenesis journal.

Sam Khan is an honorary Academic Clinical Lecturer in Medical Oncology based at the University of Leicester. She is currently undertaking a Fellowship in Thoracic Oncology at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, Toronto, Canada. Her main research interests focus on cancer prevention strategies in colorectal and lung cancer. She uses 3D ex-vivo models such as patient derived explants or spheroids as a platform for screening dietary agents and repurposed drugs. Using these models for screening helps to gain insight into the mechanism of action of potential therapeutics, develop biomarkers of response and predict patient outcomes. As a result, there is great potential for precision prevention and personalised medicine. In the future models such as these may help to rationalise clinical trial design and reduce attrition of drugs when progressing from a pre-clinical arena.

The Mutagenesis Paper of the Year Award is usually presented to the corresponding author of the most highly downloaded paper in the first six months following publication in Mutagenesis. The winning author is selected by the UKEMS committee to receive their award and present on the winning paper at the UKEMS Annual Meeting. The author(s) need not be a member of UKEMS. For more information on the journal and how to submit your manuscript, please see the website: Mutagenesis.

Please see below other recently highly downloaded papers published in Mutagenesis. UKEMS would like to thank all the authors for their contribution to the Mutagenesis journal.
