The UKEMS are pleased to announce Dr Julie Clements as this year’s recipient of the Jim Parry Award. Dr Clements will be receiving the Jim Parry Award and presenting her award lecture at this year’s UKEMS Conference, which takes place at The Clontarf Castle Hotel, Dublin, 2nd to 5th July. The Jim Parry Award is recognition of Dr Clements substantial contribution to the field of environmental mutagenesis. 

Julie Clements is the Global Lead for Genetic Toxicology at Labcorp, responsible for strategic direction and driving scientific best practice; leading a significant scientific and technical team of almost two hundred staff, providing services to Pharma, Crop Protection and Chemical clients and adjacent industries (Genetic and in vitro Toxicology assays). She joined the Labcorp (then Microtest Research Ltd) in 1990 as a Study Director and subsequently spent several years as Head of Department and in other senior operational management roles in Safety Assessment, before taking the Global Genetic Toxicology role. 

Before joining Labcorp, Dr Clements obtained a degree in Biological Sciences and a PhD in Genetics at the University of Exeter. Following a postdoctoral position at the University of Leiden, The Netherlands she returned to the UK to take up a lectureship in Genetics at the University of York. Dr Clements has served as both a committee member and chair of the Industrial Genotoxicology Group (IGG) as well as on the International Workshop on Genotoxicity Testing (IWGT). She served on the UK Committee on Mutagenicity (COM), advisory to the Government for 10 years and on the Expert group for revision of the OECD test guidelines helping shape regulatory genetic toxicology testing. Dr Clements and several of her senior scientific team are actively involved in the HESI Genetic Toxicology Technical Committee, improving existing assays and developing and integrating new and alternative approaches. Dr Clements is also a Fellow of UKEMS.
