UKEMS General Travel Bursary

UKEMS provides bursaries for UKEMS members who are students, postdoctoral or industrial workers to attend local or international scientific meetings in subjects relevant to the interests of the Society.

Applicants must have been a UKEMS member for longer than 9 months prior to the time of the Conference and should be based in the UK. They must normally also be either registered for a post-graduate degree or be a postdoctoral worker with no more than 6 years experience since receiving their PhD. Applications will be also be welcomed from UKEMS members based in industry with an equivalent level of experience.

For UKEMS members based overseas, applications will only be accepted for attendance at meetings taking place within the UK.

Applicants falling outside these criteria may be considered at the discretion of the committee.

Applications should be made using the appropriate application form by e-mail attachment to the UKEMS Treasurer, well in advance of the deadlines for registration and abstract submission for the meeting concerned; with confirmation that an abstract is to be submitted (a copy of the abstract should be included).

Bursaries will generally consist of:

• Up to £500 towards economy class travel, registration and accommodation expenses for a meeting in the UK, where the recipient is to present a poster or platform presentation.

• Up to £1000 towards economy class travel, registration and accommodation expenses for an international meeting, where the recipient is to present a poster or platform presentation.

Applications exceeding these amounts may be considered at the discretion of the UKEMS committee.

Recipients must acknowledge the support of UKEMS on their poster or slides, if giving an oral presentation. Recipients are also expected to provide a brief report (one or two paragraphs) summarising the highlights of the meeting they attended, for publication on the UKEMS website.

If UKEMS receives too many applications, the awards will be made on the basis of one per institute and/or on a first come-first served basis.

Preference may be given to applicants who are also attending the UKEMS annual conference in the same year.

Eligible members may apply for up to two bursaries per year but in order to receive two, one must be for attendance at the UKEMS annual conference.
