UKEMS Small Grants Scheme for Feasibility or Pilot Studies
Aims of the scheme
The small grants scheme is aimed to promote research into key areas of relevance to UKEMS. The awards are primarily aimed to facilitate junior investigators establishing their careers. We will also consider awards to establish pilot/feasibility studies for preliminary data, with a view to obtaining further grant funding.
Funding available and duration
Funding is available for a period of up to 12 months. Applications for the small grant scheme should not exceed £5000.
Subject to a full justification, the funds can be used to cover whatever is required to enable preliminary research to be undertaken, however will generally be considered to cover; research assistance / technical support, small items of equipment and consumables.
Please note UKEMS will only provide directly incurred costs and will not provide Full Economic Costing (fEC).
Only one application is permitted from the same applicant per call. Successful applicants, including any named co-applicants/collaborators may not be eligible for further funding until at least 24 months after a previous award has elapsed, depending on the number of applications received. Please contact the UKEMS Secretary, Kate Chapman, at k.e.chapman@swansea.ac.uk, if you or a co-applicants/collaborator are considering applying for another grant within the 24 month since the previous award has elapsed.
Eligibility
All named applicants should have been a member of the UKEMS for a minimum of one year prior to applying. Applicants may be registered for a post-graduate degree, a post-doctoral worker, or any full-time employee who is actively engaged in research of interest to the UKEMS.
The principal applicant must be based in the UK. There will also be a preference for the work to be conducted in the UK, except in exceptional circumstances, which will be judged on a case by case basis.
Application process and deadline dates
All applications must be on the UKEMS form, which can be downloaded from the website, with a brief CV of no more than 2 pages for the principle applicant attached. The small grants scheme will be advertised on the website and by emailing members. There will be one call per annum, around either November/December or March/April with deadline and review dates confirmed when the call goes out. Submitted proposals will be reviewed by the UKEMS committee and outcomes of application will normally be notified no more than 2 months after the deadline.
The deadline for receipt of applications will be at 23.59 on the deadline date. If you have any questions about the application process, please contact the UKEMS Secretary.
Report of research achieved
Successful applicants will be expected to submit a manuscript to Mutagenesis (research or review article) in a subject broadly related to the funded project as well as providing UKEMS with a written report to summarise the outcome(s) of the funded research. These are expected to be submitted within 3 months of the expiry of the award.
The report should be submitted to the Secretary of UKEMS using the attached report form for committee approval. A brief summary in layman’s terms will be used to advertise successful applications on the website. Attached to the report should be a financial account of the use of the funding. The submitted manuscript will go through the standard Mutagenesis peer-review process.
